Cooper is a 13 year old Hungarian Vizsla who had been diagnosed with Laryngeal Paralysis by his own vets. This is where one or both vocal folds in the larynx do not retract as they should, causing obstruction of the airway. He was referred to us as an outpatient to undergo Laryngeal Tie Back surgery with Dr Martin Hobbs.

On the day of surgery, Martin confirmed the diagnosis of bilateral laryngeal paralysis through oral examination once Cooper had been anaesthetised. He was then prepped for surgery which Martin undertook with Dr Rupert Davenport.

Martin made an incision on the left side of Coopers neck, locating the affected cartilage. Martin then placed two sutures on one side to hold the cartilage permanently open. Once Martin was happy with the position of the sutures, the wound was closed.

Cooper’s owner came in to be with him during his recovery to keep him as calm as possible. He was discharged the same day with a course of pain relief to be given at home.

Martin saw Cooper back 14 days after surgery and was very pleased with how he was doing. Cooper’s owner advised that his breathing was much better since the surgery. Martin removed Coopers stitches and he was signed off that day.
