CT scan and diagnoses of a tooth root abscess

This lovely boy was referred to us after developing a golf ball sized swelling on his top jaw.  He was incredibly painful and this was not a usual presentation for a dental abscess so the clients gave permission for a dental CT scan to be performed in order to rule out any further disease.

The CT scan confirmed an abscess around tooth 204 with bone loss around the associated bone, caused by the infection.  The affected tooth was removed and antibiotics were continued.

The arrow on the CT scan (shown in the image) shows the external swelling and you can also see where there is bone loss behind the swelling (grey shadow over the white bone).
